Stylus is a personal styling service by text, made by JC Media Arts, Inc. ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information Stylus collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It covers the stylus.me website, the Stylus web app and the text messages Stylus sends and receives.
In short: we use your information to make your looks and run your account. We do not sell it, we do not use it for advertising, and nothing from your account is used to style anyone else.
What we collect
What you give us
- Account details: your name, how you would like to be addressed, the email address your invitation went to, your mobile phone number, your ZIP code and time zone, and the time you would like your morning look.
- Your closet: photos of your clothes, shoes and accessories, whether you upload them, text them, or send a shop link we take a photo from, and the details read from each photo (such as the kind of piece, its colour and fabric). We also keep which pieces you mark as favourites.
- Photos you save: outfits you have worn and pictures you like.
- Your words: your rules (such as things you never wear), your preferences, your notes on single pieces and your answers at sign-up, kept in your own words with where and when you said them. If someone passes something on for you, it is marked as passed on.
- Your looks: the looks made for you and their pictures, what you asked to change, your reactions (Love it, Not today, a heart), your comments, and what you tell us you wore.
- Messages: the texts and pictures you send to Stylus and the ones Stylus sends you, with their delivery status.
- Your consent to texts: the number that joined, the time, the keyword it sent and the invitation it came from, and any STOP, START or HELP you send.
- Your calendar, only if you choose to connect one. See Your Google Calendar.
What we collect as you use Stylus
- Sign-in: the single-use links and codes we text you, and a cookie that keeps you signed in. Stylus uses cookies only to keep you signed in. We use no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking, and the public pages of stylus.me set no cookies.
- Technical details: your IP address, browser and device type, and the times you use Stylus, kept in our server logs, and error reports that help us find and fix problems.
- The weather and place for a look: the forecast for your ZIP code or for the place you mention.
What Stylus writes about you
- A summary of your style, written by the app from what you tell it. You can read and change it in the web app.
- Working notes the stylist makes while styling you. We read them to check the quality of the service. They are never used to style anyone else.
How we use it
- To make your looks. Once a week the stylist reads your closet, your words and your past looks. Each time you ask, it also gets the date, the place, the forecast, the looks you have been shown lately and, if you connected a calendar, that day's events.
- To send the texts you ask for, and your morning look if you set one.
- To sign you in, keep your account safe and answer your questions.
- To find and fix problems, and to check and improve the quality of your looks.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell it.
How the AI works with your information
Your looks are made by an AI stylist. To make one, it reads your closet photos and details, your words, your past looks and the details of the day. We use these AI providers:
- Anthropic (Claude): the stylist itself, and reading the details of a piece from its photo.
- OpenAI, with Google (Gemini) as a backup: painting the picture of each look from the photos of your pieces, and preparing piece photos.
They receive what is needed to do that work for you. Under their terms for business customers, they do not use it to train their models, and they may keep it for a limited time to check for misuse.
Each person's information is kept apart. The stylist working on your looks sees only your information and its own working space, and no stylist ever starts from another person's session.
Text messages
Stylus works by text. We text only numbers that have texted Stylus to join, and we keep a record of that consent. How joining works, the messages Stylus sends and the replies to HELP and STOP are on the SMS and RCS page.
We use your phone number and messages only to provide Stylus to you. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties. Information will not be sold or shared with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes.
Reply STOP to any Stylus text to stop all texts, or HELP for help. Message and data rates may apply.
Your Google Calendar
Connecting a calendar is optional, and Stylus works without one. If you connect a Google Calendar:
- What we access: read-only access to your calendar. We never create, change or delete events.
- What we use: the start and end time, title and place of each day's events, on the calendars you choose. Cancelled and declined events are left out, events you answered "maybe" are marked as such, and other people's events on a shared calendar are not counted as yours. We do not use or keep event descriptions, attachments or guest lists.
- Why: only so that your morning look suits your day.
- Who sees it: that day's event lines go to the AI stylist (Anthropic) to make that day's look, and to no one else. Calendar details never appear in a text message.
- How it is kept: the access Google gives us is stored encrypted. We keep calendar details only as long as needed to make and adjust that day's look.
- Disconnecting: you can disconnect in Settings in the Stylus web app, or in your Google Account under third-party connections. We then delete the access Google gave us.
Stylus's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not use information from Google APIs for advertising, we do not sell it, we do not let people read it except to keep Stylus secure, to comply with the law or with your permission, and we do not use it to develop, improve or train AI models in general.
Who we share it with
We share your information only with companies that run parts of Stylus for us, under agreements that limit them to that work:
- Telnyx: sends and receives our text messages (SMS, MMS and RCS).
- Anthropic, OpenAI and Google: the AI work described above.
- Supabase: our database and photo storage.
- Render: hosts the Stylus app and this website.
- Visual Crossing: weather forecasts. It receives a place and a date, never your name or contact details.
- Resend: sends invitations and account emails.
- Honeybadger: error reports, so we can find and fix problems.
- Google: your calendar, only if you connect it.
We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect the safety or rights of our members or others, or as part of a sale or transfer of Stylus, in which case this policy continues to apply to it.
All the above exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent, which will not be shared with any third parties. Information will not be sold or shared with third parties for promotional or marketing purposes.
How long we keep it
- Your account, closet, words, looks and messages: for as long as you use Stylus.
- The stylist's working session for a single look: 7 days. Its weekly working session: 8 weeks.
- When you delete your account, we delete your information from our database, our photo storage and the stylist's working folders within 30 days. Copies in our backups are removed as the backups roll over, within a further 30 days.
- We keep a short record of your consent to texts and of any STOP (the number, the time and the keyword) for as long as the law requires us to be able to show it.
- Our providers may keep some records for a limited time under their own schedules, such as delivery records of text messages. Texts and emails already delivered cannot be recalled.
How we protect it
- Your information travels encrypted between your device and Stylus.
- Your photos are kept in private storage in a folder of your own, and shown only to you after you sign in.
- Our database keeps each person's information walled off from everyone else's.
- Calendar access is stored encrypted, and only the people who run Stylus can reach our systems.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you as the law requires.
Your choices and rights
- See and change what Stylus has learned about you, and correct any piece in your closet, in the web app.
- Stop all texts by replying STOP, or pause only your morning look by texting PAUSE.
- Disconnect your calendar at any time.
- Ask for a copy of your information.
- Delete your account, in Settings or by email.
Depending on where you live, including California, you may have the right to know what we collect, to have a copy, to correct it, and to have it deleted, and not to be treated differently for asking. We do not sell or share personal information as California law defines those terms. To use any of these rights, email support@stylus.me. We may need to confirm it is you, usually with a code sent to your phone, and we will reply within 45 days.
Children
Stylus is for adults 18 and over. It is not meant for children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.
Where your information is kept
Stylus is offered in the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new date. If a change is significant, we will tell members by email before it takes effect.
